HARLISTAS de CUBA

Thousands of Harley-Davidson motorcycles once rumbled across Cuba, but today only a few hundred remain nearly a half century after the island’s last Harley dealership closed. “They’re an endangered species,” said Jose Angel “Pipi”Perez, a Cuban mechanic who restores Harleys. “They are disappearing.”But Cuba’s hogs aren’t gone yet thanks to the remarkable efforts of a group known as Harlistas.Harlistas have kept their engines running despitedecades of hardship and economic isolation.
Almost all their motorcycles are at least 50 years old.Yet they find a way to keep them alive, scavenging parts from battered old trucks, lawn mowers and even
anti-tank guns.

"These motorcycles have got our sweat all over them,almost like a coat of paint," said Adolfo Prieto, who rides a 1958 Panhead. "All that's American about our Harleys anymore is the name. They've got a Cubansoul."
Cuban mechanics have taken one of the ultimate symbols of Americana and made it their own.
After the United States cut off trade with Cuba in the early 1960s, Harlistas couldn’t get any spare parts, not even tires or brakes. So they were forced to improvise. One old-school mechanic used barbed wire to fix broken chains. Another started cutting up cake boxes to make engine gaskets. That led to his nickname, Cake Box, which sticks to this day.Harlistas have done whatever it takes to keep their motorcycles on the road, even it means
using:
* Pistons from Russian trucks.
* Chains stripped from the conveyor belts of a pre-Castro Coca-Cola factory.
* Fiat ambulance horns from Poland.
* Exhaust pipes made from tubes ripped from electrical transformers.
* Tires from VW Beetles.

But the Harlistas’ story is about more than heroic mechanics. It's about pride and passion, love and family, loyalty and brotherhood. It’s about Panheads, Flatheads and Knuckleheads being passed along for three generations. It’s a tale of man and machine like no other in the world.

Cuba’s circumstances make the story unique. Harleys had a rich history on the island before the 1959 revolution. Then along came a charismatic leader named Fidel Castro. He embraced the former Soviet Union and decades of Cold War hostility followed. Socialist Cuba shunned symbols of United States including Harleys, the American flag and rock ‘n’ roll. And the U.S. hit Cuba with the longest, toughest economic sanctions ever imposed in any nation on earth. It’s a wonder Harley-Davidson survived at all. Some of the toughest moments came in the 1980s.

Many Harleys had broken down by then and few Cuban riders wanted them. They preferred new, lighter German, Czech and Soviet motorcycles. But some die-hard Harlistas stuck with their antiques, learning to restore the machines and rescuing them from the brink of extinction. Soon they knew how to fabricate or repair almost everything that goes into a Harley, from the crankshaft and carburetor to the tire rims, speedometer and windshield.

In 1989, the Soviet Union fell, pushing Cuba close to economic collapse. Harlistas grew to depend even more on their motorcycles for their own economic survival. Even today, many Harlistas rely on their motorcycles for essential tasks – getting to work, to the market and to school. Some even use their motorcycles to haul construction material, bricks and other cargo. Outside Cuba, many of these Panheads, Flatheads and Knuckleheads would have wound up on the scrap heap long ago. Others would have landed in museums and in the hands of collectors.

But on the island, most are working motorcycles, not show pieces. And they’re often present during the important moments of a Harlista’s life: Weddings and funerals, baptisms and Quinceañeras, the coming of age party held on a girl's 15th birthday. Sergio Morales, a Harley mechanic in Havana, has had his 1946 Knucklehead for 35 years. People call it Super Abuela – or Super Grandmother – “because it’s one of the oldest motorcycles around,” he said. “Super Abuela belongs to the family. It’s part of the house, part of the family. We don’t keep it just for pleasure. We use it for work, to solve transportation problems.”

Not surprisingly, many Harlistas keep their motorcycles in coveted spots in the living
room or on the patio, not the garage. And toddlers began playing on the machines as soon as they can crawl. Some Harlistas ride the same motorcycles their grandfathers owned before the revolution.
The first Harley-Davidson production motorcycle was made in 1903. By 1919, production hit 22,000 motorcycles. A year later, Luis Bretos opened a Harley dealership in Havana. Police officers rode Harleys back then, and so did workers from the phone and electrical companies.
“The Harley-Davidson is the tractor and the Cadillac of motorcycles,” said Antonio
Miniet, who led a group of Harley riders who performed acrobatics in Cuba. “No other motorcycle is as strong.” After the 1959 revolution, some people rejected Harleys in Cuba.

“They were seen as a thing of capitalism,” said Raul Corrales, a longtime Harlista who lives in the seaside town of Cojimar. “People looked down on things that were American and even more on Harleys because that was the motorcycle that the police used.” Before the revolution, when Fulgencio Batista was in power, police had a reputation for brutality, Corrales said. “When you’d appear on a Harley, people would say, ‘That’s the motorcycle of Batista’s police,’ even if you weren’t a policeman.” But Harleys endured over the years and are now some of the most sought-after motorcycles in Cuba.

Many Cuban riders want them – and so do foreigners. Some foreigners offer to buy the old Harleys for $20,000 and more. The temptation to sell is great in the country,
where the average wage is $15 and even a surgeon might earn $20 or $30 per month.
And some Harlistas fear that their way of life, borne of hardship and necessity, is fading away along with their vintage motorcycles. “I see the future of Cuba’s motorcyclists as somewhat dark,” said Corrales, son of a famed Cuban photographer. “We’re losing our identity.”

For most of us, our first experience of two wheels is cycling. For me, this is where it all started.

There is an important road cycling culture in France and every summer during the 1970s we'd watch the Tour de France on TV with passion. I was fascinated by the aesthetics and technology of these machines and the bravery and skill of the riders. Then one day I discovered motorbikes, and from then on I thought bicycles would hold no more interest for me, feeling very proud sat astride a throbbing machine.

After becoming a city dweller I considered using a bicycle again as a quick and economical mode of transport. In recent years and under various influences, our sons for example, we have seen the rise of the BMX and fixie phenomenon.

We really liked this mix of urban culture.

With my friend Benoit, we finished the "CP project" in late 2009, when the challenge to build our own bicycle began. For this, our friend Med, thanks to his experience, was the ideal partner. Owner of the Focale 44 brand in Andorra, he supplied a frame modified according to our needs. A beautiful road frame, lightweight and singlespeed ready.

For simplicity and aesthetic reasons we wanted a pure and radical design, free of any superfluous parts.

We opted for a brakeless front hub and a rear coaster brake hub, keeping the handlebar clear of any components in order to keep the lines clean. We also developed an integrated lighting concept, with lights designed into the seatstays and handlebar.As we did not like the style of modern stems, we developed our own. Similarly, we also developed our own cranks, chain guides and wheelnuts.

All these parts have been manufactured and painted by our wizard friend Momo, whose skills need no introduction. As a final touch the seat has been finished in leather by our saddler, Claude Carrière.
We have created this bicycle as if it were a Christmas present to ourselves. However, a limited edition is in production and is available to buy. Prices vary depending on selected options.

La première expérience à deux roues est en général le vélo, c'est par là que personnellement tout a commencé.
En France, nous avons une tradition du vélo de course, tous les étés, dans les années 70, nous regardions avec passion le Tour de France à la télévision. J'étais fasciné par l'aspect esthétique et technique de ces machines et l'héroïsme des coureurs.Un jour, la moto est entrée dans ma vie, j'ai alors longtemps pensé que le vélo n'avait plus d'intérêt, me sentant très fier sur une machine vrombissante.
C'est en venant habiter dans une grande ville que j'ai à nouveau songé à utiliser la bicyclette comme moyen de déplacement rapide et économique. Ces dernières années, sous diverses influences, celles de nos fils par exemple, nous avons vu éclore le phénomène BMX puis fixed gear.
Ce mix de culture urbaine était fait pour nous plaire...

Avec mon ami Benoit, nous venions de terminer le "CP project" fin 2009, lorsque le pari de construire notre propre vélo fût lancé. Pour cela, nôtre ami "Med" grâce à son expérience, était le partenaire tout désigné. Propriétaire de la marque "Focale 44" en Andorre, il nous a fourni le cadre de leur conception, modifié selon nos besoins, un beau cadre street léger et singlespeed.

Nous avons souhaité, pour des raisons de simplicité et d'esthétique, un vélo aux lignes pures et radicales dénué en apparence de tout superflu.
Nous avons opté pour un moyeu avant sans frein et un moyeu arrière à rétropédalage, dégageant le guidon de tout accessoire afin de préserver la ligne.Nous avons développé un concept d'éclairage "intégré" dans les haubans du cadre et dans le guidon. L' estéthique des systèmes de potence actuels ne nous plaisant pas... nous avons aussi développé la nôtre ainsi que le pédalier, le guide-chaine et les papillons de roues.Nous avons confié la réalisation de ces éléments ainsi que le travail de peinture à nôtre sorcier et ami Momo, dont les talents ne sont plus à démontrer...Et pour finir la selle a été recouverte de cuir par notre sellier Claude Carrière.

Nous avons crée ce vélo, un peu comme notre cadeau de Noël. Cependant, nous avons d'ores et déjà mis en fabrication une série limitée si vous souhaitez en faire l'acquisition.Les prix varient en fonctions des options choisies.

Olivier Mosset... Motorcycle Lover

Two years ago , we published with the help of my friend Emmanuel Brunet a first post about Olivier Mosset. A few months ago, Emmanuel sent me what we could qualify as an "Essay" talking about the same Guy - Olivier Mosset - but not only... Emmanuel was talking about his vision of art in general... I found this text very intense and so clear, I wanted to post this one too...

In 1977 our friend Emmanuel Brunet was an 18 year old Fine Arts Student, in Bordeaux, when he became fascinated by the discovery of a bold & irreverent text, published by an artistic movement, known as the BMPT, in 1967.

Emmanuel says:
The BMPT, was a bunch of guys formed by Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier & Neil Toroni. These guys were creating murals, painting black circles over white backgrounds or black vertical stripes over white surfaces. They liked to consider themselves : the "Ground Zero of Painting"

The text red: "As painting is a game, as paint is tuning or detuning colors. As paint is applying (consciously or not) rules for composition. As painting is enhancing the gesture. As painting is representing the outside (or interpreting it, or appropriating it, or showing it!). As painting is offering a springboard for imagination. As painting is illustrating the interiority. Because painting is a justification. As paint is useful. As painting is done according to the rules of aesthetics, flowers, women, eroticism, the everyday environment, art, dada, psychoanalysis, war in Vietnam... WE ARE NOT PAINTERS. "

The BMTP, wanted to get loose on form convictions, or any other artistic structure aimed to limit the path or space for any painted expression to be classified as art. They refused to be considered painters. They just wanted to be seen as a group of people that exhibited their work in galleries.

Emmanuel says:
For me this bunch were just another reflection of the nihilist punk reasoning that was exploding across world culture In 1977. Punk bands were growing like shrooms, and the band members were not musicians! They were just groups of guys that played loud music. Their tempos were fast and slang. Their messages were rude and scarce.
Like the BMPT bunch they yelled... WE ARE NOT MUSICIANS!

The spark that ignited this essay, was the casual find of Harley Davidson Chopper picture, belonging to a certain Olivier Mosset. The bike showed a tank paint in a rugged Jackson Pollock style. Some research after I had already found a portrait of Olivier, while living in the USA(Tucson AZ.), with the bike & himself styling a neat perfect biker look. The finding provoked my surprise, as I found interesting how our "No Painter" from the 70's, had evolved from the most minimal of minimalisms to an over the top custom chopper habitude.

This incongruence, (only so if we applied a simplistic eye), in O.Mosset's endeavor, gave me a second thought. The history of Harley Davidson has rocketed through time since its early 1900s birth, and has meant and served as many symbols, icons or ideals to different generations. In a way I realized that a Harley Chopper was not just a motorcycle, as the BMPT were not painters or the punksters were not musicians!

At the time, the B.M.P.T.'s aim, was to demonstrate how derisory in the arts, is the cult of personality. They loved to play hide and seek, sometimes, showing off how their paintings were dominated by the style of another member of the group.It is just the same with a Harley modifying culture, There is an author, a spark, in all currents, but his "work is all over the place" and the status of its creator fades away.

Like Olivier Mosset - talking of himself as an"artist before being a painter" - based on the principles of neutrality, deletion and radicalism, I always questioned the logics & limits of painting. The same logic is applied when my path crosses that of a biker. I always have this strange feeling: "That's the kind of a biker who's not just a biker..!".

I guess you might feel the same.

The Curator at Southsiders Motorcycle Culture

After collecting rare archival photographs and original clothing since 1977, Nick Clements decided to turn his interest in vintage apparel and classic motorcycles into a business and started both Men's File magazine and The Curator clothing line. The idea of The Curator is to take items of clothing from archival photographs from the 1940s, 50 and 60, in the areas of motorcycling and cycle style and copy them in original fabrics and with very high quality make. The Curator carefully selects items that are impossible to find even on Ebay (or at least sell there at very high prices) and makes them in limited editions.
Most of the clothing on The Curator site are made by world famous manufacturers who respect the approach of The Curator and wish to associate themselves with a brand that is 'doing something different'.

Ever wonder why clothing made from selvage edged fabrics is so expensive? Simple – the machines making it are old and take extra time to weave the edges, then, more importantly, they weave a traditional cloth width of 40 to 45 inches (compared to 72 inches on modern looms) making selvage edged cloth twice as expensive. Also, felt? Ever wondered why some felt products are very cheap and some very expensive? Again, simple, all the original patches form the 1940s and 50s were made out of 100% wool felt. Today most felt is polyester and looks terrible. We only use 100% wool felt like the old days, but the cost is high. Believe it or not the 100% wool felt we use for our lettering and patches is actually ‘rare’.

What we use:
Selvage Japanese denim (various weights and shades).
Selvage Japanese chambray (various types and shades including rare cotton / wool mixes).
Selvage canvas (various types).
100% wool felts.
100% merino wool.
100% pure wool.

Custom Letters and Numbers

We can now provide 100% wool felt letter and numbers and even logos at a reasonable price, but they are still not cheap.

We can't quote on this page without knowing what it is you want but you should think of an initial cost of about £35 to set up the cutter then £5 each to get them cut-out and sewn on, however this really depends on what it is exactly that you need. We have in stock the figures: 1953, 1964, VELO and PISTA.

Last May, during the Vintage Montlhéry Revival, I had a chance to meet the Belgian crew from the Moto retro club of Famenne Ardenne. We took time around a Trappist beer to discover three of the best Belgian single bikes ever. A FN(Fabrique Nationale) 500 M67 type from 1930, a Gillet Herstal 550 "Compé-Client" from 1929 and a Sarolea 50, 245 type from 1929.

I visited Rimini back in 2006 to find out more about this company of Scientologists who built incredible hub-centre steered Ducati-powered UFOs. I had the 999R-powered bike for the weekend and fell in love with it. It cost £38,000 back thenand made 157bhp. The air-cooled version was something like €23,500 and I started thinking what I could sell to get one. The shot of me riding it, taken by my friend James Cheadle, has featured in Kriega's advertising and people still get in contact to ask me things like what boots I'm wearing.

There's a lot of sneering directed toward scooterists, but they're some of the most hardcore two-wheelers in the Western World. These Lambretta-riding idiots don't think twice about scooting 1800 miles to Italy and back on a 45-year-old woman's shopping bike. I've had mine SX200 for nearly 20 years and I'll never sell it. It's beautiful. I hardly ever ride it either, but next summer I'm going to get it sorted so I can take my 9-year-old boy on the back.

Racefit Spondon Kawasaki GPz
This bike, and the first three Wrenchmonkee Kawasakis, turned my idea of what was a great performance special on its head. I love everything about it, even if Jon Racefit was never happy with the gap between the back of the engine and the rear loop of the frame (caused because the Spondon frame was designed for the older and larger Z1000 motor). Racefit and some of their elite customers are building incredible 1981 style AMA superbikes with the highest spec components. I'm trying too.

Wood Rotax
The simplicity of an air-cooled dirt track bike does it for me every time, and Ron Wood's classic design for the Rotax takes some beating. Harley-Davidson bought a bunch and rebadged it as an H-D 500R, much to Wood's chagrin. There is nothing superfluous on the bike and they're close to indestructible. Wood Rotaxes have won dozens of top US races in the hands of Chris Carr and others, too.

RSD Glory Stomper
I love the majority of Roland's bikes and he rides the crap out of them. This is my favourite though. I'd already been over to see Roland in California and then met him again when he brought this bike to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The mix of high-spec Öhlins suspension, huge V-twin, swooping composite frame and swingarm and that MotoGP style exhaust seemed so fresh back in 2006 (2006 was a good year). The paint was inspired by a pattern dunhill were using on the wallets and bags, showing how diverse Roland's inspirations are. It even made brown anodising cool. Who ever saw that coming? The wheelbase is a bit long, but I'll forgive it.

Offered for sale by Sonny Angel. I am his son-in-law, selling bikes on his behalf. Sonny's wife Chris passed away last month after a four year battle with cancer, and Sonny, now 86, is looking to retire from the motorcycle business. I will be listing several other bikes for sale, and all are available for viewing at his shop, Sonny Angel Motorcycles, in National City, California. This is a privately-owned motorcycle, not a shop bike.

For sale is a 1975 Norton Commando 850cc Interstate, black, with zero miles. Bike has never seen the light of day. Sonny purchased the bike in 1975, and placed in the back of his shop for safe keeping. The crate has been sitting in the same spot since 1975, and still has the original two metal bands around the cardboard box. The room was not temperature controlled, so condition of the bike inside the crate is unknown. I can not see the bike, but I can see the rear wheel and spokes through an opening (pictured). Looks to be in good shape. The box has bike parts stacked on top, but they have not damaged the cardboard.

Of course, the value of this bike comes from the fact that the crate has never been opened, and has no miles. Any serious buyer will understand our reasons for not opening the crate and taking photographs. We will be glad to show the crate to any serious buyer, please contact me first to make an appointment.

This may be the ONLY zero-mile, crated Commando in existence. Don't pass up this opportunity to own a rare example of motorcycle history.

The Southsiders babe of the month is the work of an unknown but admirable photographer, Miroslav Tichy. this Czech just passed away at the age of 84. He was street photographer and loved photographing women.
He built his own cameras and enlargers with cardboards, made himself his own frames.

His images, abstract and full of imperfections exude a timeless and mysterious atmosphere.

Tichy says:

Photography is painting with light! The blurs, the spots, those are errors! But the errors are part of it, they give it poetry and turn it into painting. And for that you need as bad a camera as possible! If you want to be famous, you have to do whatever you're doing worse than anyone else in the whole world.

My Grand-father was a "poilu", from the WW1. The term "poilu" comes from Napoleon army meaning "The Hairy one" or the "courageous one" for the Infantrymen. He spent four years in the mud sharing his meals with rats, including the trenches of Verdun, incorporated in a "Crapouillot section" the ancestor of the mortar. While my uncles and my other grandfather didn't come home, he returned to his region of the Pyrenees, living quietly but living nightmares every night ...

Pat and his small but fun homemade Bobber, Suzykee engined..., Hedi and the fantastic 1947 Knucklehead brought back in France for a fistful of Dollars...twenty five years ago, Phil Duke a kind of Marlon Brando replica with a wonderful T110 Triumph just period perfect ! the Young Steven a great surfer with a TR6 Triumph...he was my driver, Phil and the tiny toy TR5, and Bixente, the man behind "Bixente motos" with a road Rocket BSA scrambler .

I have always been passionate about Spain. Since I was very young, in our travels we always felt the the good vibration it pours. I traveled all over the country and find every occasion to go back a good one. Recently in my last trip I encountered a new region, Galicia, very different from the rest of Spain. This region has a very strong personality, from its landscapes to its inhabitants' origins ... David rode us there for the first time of many. He is a truly special specimen and there he's known by the name of "El Solitario". May be it is because he has spent more time abroad than in his native country, which has probably forged his dissident character, and also his love for old motorcycles and their culture. David spent five years in Miami before moving back to Spain and opening "El Solitario Heritage Motorcycle Co.". In his workshop, he has already started the building and transformation of classic and vintage motorcycles. It's great to see those wooden benches already full of work in progress! You can breathe the challenge in its origins. The challenge of a man that left everything behind to pursue his dreams. We are eager to see his very first works that will be exposed in June at the Southsiders week-end.

Me confieso un enamorado de España desde muy temprana edad. Es un pais donde siempre he percibido buenas sensaciones y que conozco bien tras multiples viajes a lo largo y ancho de su territorio. En mi ultimo viaje descubri Galicia, una region distinta y misteriosa. Tierra de gran personalidad, tanto en sus paisajes como en sus origines. Alli nos llevo David, un personaje muy especial... Alli le llaman El Solitario, dado que se ha pasado gran parte de su vida vagando por distintos lugares del mundo, siempre lejos de su tierra natal, lo que probablemente sea la raiz de su marcado caracter disidente y su pasion por las motos viejas y la cultura que las rodea. David vivio 5 años de su vida en Miami antes de su regreso a Galicia, para la apertura del El Solitario Heritage Motorcycle Co. En los bancos de su taller ya se perfilan las siluetas de sus primeras creaciones y huele a madera quemada y desafio. El desafio de un hombre que lo dejo todo para realizar sus sueños. Ansiamos el momento de poder contemplar sus obras que seran expuestas en Junio en la fiesta de Southsiders MC.

The bike-building scene in Spain is absolutely booming, and I’ve no idea why. We have the specialists—like Radical Ducati—and the new wave custom shops, like Café Racer Dreams. Now we have El Solitario MC, based in the Galician town of Gondomar and run by vintage motorcycle racer David Borras. It’s hard to categorize this shop, but it’s run on enthusiasm and skill, without being tied to any particular style. This distinctive, heavily patina’d machine is the first creation, a matching numbers Triumph T120R that’s had a complete motor rebuild and been fitted with a hardtail frame. The rims are Borrani—19” rear and 21” front—with a 1971 Triumph twin leading shoe drum up front and race tires. Carburetion is twin Amal monobloc, and David has also fitted a QPD open belt drive and Boyer Bransden ignition. The tank and rear fender are classic Wassell. It’s grungy, oddball and stylish at the same time, and will no doubt polarise opinion …

Asger Jorn (1914-1973), founder of the Cobra movement in 1948 and probably Denmark's most celebrated 20th century artist. He spent much of his life in France, where during the 1930s he studied at Fernand Léger's studio. In the 1950s and 1960s he played a leading role in several avant-garde movements, most notably the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus (1953-1957) and the International Situationist (1957-1960).
We were passionate about the Cobra movement and other partners for their vitality and their community spirit (international networks and friendships, self-help - a coming together of all the brightest minds of the period).

These personalities and their friends were a synthesis and conclusion of the Modern Art of the twentieth century.
A small group and an immense work of freedom, poetry and all mediums were used (collage - painting - drawing - writing - including their text references - planning - architecture - cinema - provocations - leaflets - butterflies - posters) everything used!

Cobra is also "free calligraphy", the mix: medieval culture and Nordic + primitive art + art brut + unbridled spontaneity and rejection of specialization.
Also their not so colorful abstract expressionism and sense of humor was devastating!

- Asger Jorn and Christian Dotremont were members of the "International Situationist" (the most unique movement in the history of modern art and philosophy / contemporary politics).
- Karel Appel and Pierre Alechinsky them being two of the greatest painters and modern sculptors.

Cobra is the exact opposite of "Cocoon Cool and Arts Décoratifs" that has pervaded the modern world.

Good for Retro and Classic Motorcycles

During the austere and oppressive reign of General Franco—a remarkable 36 years from 1939 to 1975—foreign motorcycles were a rarity in Spain. So this BMW R75/5 must be a novelty on Iberian roads. It’s owned by Juan Ramón Ortega, a Madrileño with a longstanding passion for BMWs. He bought this 1972 model six years ago: “It’s one of three R75/5s that I found in Belgium and brought back in a small truck with some friends. Then we left the bikes gathering dust … the crisis came.” Two years ago, Ortega wheeled out his bike and started work. He cut down the rear subframe, fitted a Harley-Davidson rear fender and a Ford stoplight, and got out the paint gun. He also fitted a new hand made seat, Renthal bars and Firestone vintage-style tires. Racing-style number plates from England provided the finishing touch. But this custom is no bar-hopper: Ortega has just finished a huge motorcycle tour of Spain and Portugal, and it’s his daily driver too. For such a practical bike, it’s remarkably beautiful.

Spain and Portugal 2011 Part II

After a night in Salamanca's streets, the third day began with some roadside repairs to my Guzzi under the watchful eye of Santo Domingo. Thanks to Juan Ramon who kindly brought the much needed part all the way from Madrid, we were soon on the road again to Portugal.

The sky above was grey and threatening, just the way I like it!
For maximum riding pleasure we kept to the minor roads where possible, even though it probably doubled the length of our journey.

A few kilometres down the road we stopped at what could easily have been the Baghdad cafe, far from anywhere we sat down for a banquet of Spain's finest ham and wine. The 'Guijuelo Restaurant', you probably won't find it in the Michelin guide. One of life's simple pleasures, good friends around the dinner table, far from anyway, excellent.

Here we are... In Portugal

The rest of the day we rode mile after mile on deserted roads, with the dark skies above this was certainly one of the more memorable moments of the road-trip, until finally the heavens opened up as we crossed the frontier into Portugal.
We headed to the nearest village, Termas de Monforthino, where the only shelter and apparent sign of life was at the local bar. After a beer with the locals they were only too happy to direct us to a 'Pensao', or bed and breakfast, with enough rooms to house an Army let alone a few bedraggled bikers!
To finish the day we headed to the finest restaurant in town, an easy choice as there was only one to choose from and after a superb dinner it was back to the Pensao in the early hours for some Spanish style measures of Rum!

On the morning of the fourth day and just after a few kilometres El Solitario's Panhead broke down in the middle of nowhere's ville. For once it was not me and the Guzzi slowing our progress. With plenty of helping hands and to the sound of Bob Dylan, the Linkert was soon in pieces.
Once cleaned and reassembled, which didn't actually do much to improve the Pans performance, we were on the move again, Acres and acres of Eucalyptus and Olive trees flashed by, hour after hour passed and the group became separated but we headed onwards. Our sights were on Lisbon and the seaside bungalows reserved by Joao, eventually we arrived late at night.

And so began our stay in Lisbon, beautiful sunshine and lodgings on the beach. With our guide Joao, we rode the coast north and south of Lisbon by day, and experienced Lisbon and Tequila by night!
We also met up with the boys from 'Rev' magazine for a photo shoot.

Then came the time to say au revoir to our friends. Juan left us to join his family in Madrid and 'El Solitario' headed off with plans for everyone to meet up again in Galicia in northern Portugal. Our original group took the road north via Eciceira, Nazare, Sao Pedro de Moel.

Then the transmission on the Guzzi began to emit some worrying sounds, I pressed on regardless arriving at Praia de Mira where we spent the night.
The following morning the Guzzi's final drive drive broke and in an instant, I realised that it was the end of the road-trip for the two of us. With absolutely no chance of repairing the bike locally due to a complete absence of Moto guzzi delaers, the only solution was to repatriate the Guzzi to France.

Mark and Polo continued on the road north while we stayed behind to coordinate bikes the recovery.

We would have given anything to be with Mark and Polo, as they crossed the Portugese Spanish frontier at midnight, but for us the trip to Galicia was in the back of a Taxi. With everyone safely regrouped in Galicia, we were treated to several days of luxury with David and Val's family, superb cuisine lovingly prepared by Davids mother followed by long nights partying thanks to Loren. All of it unforgetable.

We wished it could last forever but eventually the time came to repatriate the Guzzi back to Toulouse. El Solitario lent me his van to recover the Guzzi from Portugal and then the long road all the way to Toulouse, off with the Guzzi, on with the Norton, and en suite all the way back to Galicia! Three thousand kilometres in three days.

Back in Galicia we were once again ready to continue the road trip, this time on the Norton, less comfortable but lighter and better handling. Our paths seperated once more, Mark and Polo opted for a slighter quicker route back to France while we preferred heading northwards to the coast beginning with Gijon, Santander and onwards to Bilbao.
I don't particularly like Bilbao but the idea of finishing our journey with a visit to the Guggenheim museum was iresistable. Our voyage ended there, all that remained was the final three hour ride back home in the rain.
